BALTIMORE, MD: Surveillance of anti-death penalty protesters and other activists by the Maryland State Police was broader and went on longer than previously disclosed, according to files that were turned over by police to dozens of activists who were improperly labeled as terrorists.
The files revealed that those labeled as terrorists included environmentalists, peace activists, animal rights activists and some people who have never participated in protests in Maryland.
Police allowed 53 people whom the agency acknowledged it wrongly classified as terrorists to view its files on them. However, the files it turned over were heavily redacted, and the activists and their attorneys said Wednesday that state police still have not come clean.
"After engaging in this secret intrusion, which everybody knows is wrong — including them, by admission — they are now engaging in pervasive secrecy about what they did and what it connects up with," said Barry Kissin, a Frederick attorney who was one of the 53 so-called terrorists. read more

Daily Telegraph: NASA has successfuly conducted a first test of a deep space communications network modelled on the internet. "This is the first step in creating a totally new space communications capability, an interplanetary internet," Adrian Hooke, NASA's manager of space-networking architecture, technology and standards, said.
The US space agency said Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineers used software called Disruption-Tolerant Networking, or DTN, to transmit dozens of space images to and from a NASA spacecraft some 32.4 million kilometers from Earth. NASA said the software protocol, which must be able to withstand delays, disruptions and disconnections in space, was designed in partnership with Vint Cerf, a vice president at search giant Google.
DTN sends information using a method that differs from the normal Internet's Transmission-Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, or TCP/IP, communication suite, which Cerf co-designed, NASA said. Unlike TCP/IP, DTN does not assume a continuous end-to-end connection, NASA said, noting that glitches can happen when a spacecraft moves behind a planet, or when solar storms and long communication delays occur. read more

Claire Bates, Daily Mail: A spectacular and almost blindingly bright meteor sparked a flurry of emergency calls to the police after it lit up the skies over western Canada. Onlookers across the province of Alberta watched in awe, describing a kaleidoscope of colours as the rock rapidly descended.
'At first I thought it was fireworks,' farmer Marcel Gobeil said. 'I've never seen anything like it; it was green and blue and then turned to bright red. It was pretty big.'
Emergency services across the region began receiving calls from 5.30pm on Thursday, with some also reporting hearing a distant 'boom.' And the police had no reason to doubt the claims. A video camera on one of their local patrol cars had captured the whole dramatic episode.
As the vehicle cruises down a street the footage shows a small bright light appearing in the sky before hurtling towards the Earth disappearing in an explosion of light just five seconds later.

 Daniel Martin, Daily Mail: From being virtually bedridden after her windpipe became blocked, 30-year-old Claudia Castillo is now able to resume the active life she once had. The breakthrough is thanks to the pioneering work of British scientists, who are hailing a new dawn in transplant surgery which they believe could revolutionise the lives of millions.
They have won an international race to be the first to use adult stem cells to grow an entire organ and implant it successfully. They believe the technique could be extended to allow surgeons to replace organs such as the heart and the lung, and are confident it will be the normal way of carrying out transplants in just two decades.
And because the technique makes use of adult stem cells donated by the patient, it sidesteps the ethical issues around the use of embryonic stem cells.
Martin Birchall, professor of surgery at the University of Bristol, said: ‘What we’re seeing today is just the beginning. 'I reckon in 20 years’ time it will be the commonest operation surgeons will be doing. It will completely transform the way we think about surgery, health and disease.' read more

Despite the economic slump, SUV sales are back up in the US. However, the automotive trend in Japan has been the reverse: in recent years, tiny cars called Kei have become ubiquitous. So small as to make Mini Coopers look bloated, Kei cars are seen as the future of transportation, as they are ideal for coping with high gas prices, tough parking, and traffic congestion. Toyota is considering introducing them in America, and would be made here by the Big Three "if Detroit had any sense," Wired writes.

This week, Better Place cut a $1bn dollar deal to bring electric car charging stations to the San Francisco area. Better Place is without question, the most ambitious startup to ever come out of Israel and perhaps the company that has the best chance of restructuring the automobile industry in the next 5 years.
Better Place will replace fossil fuel burning cars with electricity consuming cars using a series of battery swapping stations around a given metropolitan area. Nissan is the first company to build the cars. Israel became the first country to commit to building the infrastructure and now Denmark and San Francisco are joining them. read more
